Free To Play: Parent Interview
Moving to a new city can be daunting, especially for families trying to help their children adjust. For Ronan and Mesia, newcomers to Edmonton, finding ways to keep their kids active and engaged was a top priority. Through Free Play, they discovered more than just a sports program—they found a supportive community and an opportunity for their kids to play, belong and grow.
Ronan’s Story: Building Confidence and Teamwork
Ronan recently moved from Hong Kong to Edmonton with his family, including his daughter, Giselle. Adjusting to a new city was challenging, especially when trying to find extracurricular activities to keep Giselle active. Ronan wanted her to grow stronger, healthier, and more involved in sports, but he struggled to find the right program.
That’s when his family discovered Free Play.

Through the program, Giselle not only improved her physical fitness but also developed a newfound sense of teamwork and participation. “The most important change I observed is her mindset,” Ronan shared proudly. For Giselle, sports became a way to grow, make friends, and embrace her new community.
Mesia’s Story: Creating Opportunities for Active Play
Mesia, a newcomer to Edmonton, noticed a big cultural shift when her family moved from Africa. Back home, children spent their days outdoors, constantly playing and being active. But here, she found her kids staying indoors more often.
“I tried to take them to parks and everything,” she explained, “but it’s not the same. Kids want to be involved in sports and play with other children.”
Parent Interview: Mesia
Discovering Free Play was a turning point for Mesia and her family. Her child now comes home brimming with excitement, eager to share stories about the sports he’s played and the skills he’s learned. “It’s been really positive for him,” Mesia said. Through Free Play, her child has found a way to stay active, connect with peers, and thrive in their new environment.
